International Hydrological Programme

    Achievements: from 1990 to 1995

    • 1991, publication of ‘The Disappearing Tropical Forests’, first volume in the Humid Tropics Programme Series, co-sponsored by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme. Other topics that have since been covered by the series include education, health, urbanization, women, small tropical islands, groundwater and wetlands


    • 1991, the UNESCO/WMO report ‘Water Resources Assessment’, to follow up on the implementation of the Mar del Plata Action Plan and introduce a strategy for the 1990s


    • The 2nd revised edition of the UNESCO/WMO International Glossary of Hydrology, first released in 1974


    • 1992, establishment of the Water Centre for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) in Panama by the Republic of Panama and UNESCO


    • 1993, launch of the International Hydrology Book Series with Cambridge University Press


    • 1995, revamping of the quarterly newsletter ‘IHP Information’ to become ‘IHP Waterway’


    • Publication of the first volume of ‘Catalogue of Rivers of Southeast Asia and the Pacific’, compiled under the auspices of the IHP Regional Steering Committee for Southeast Asia and the Pacific
