Achievements: from 2002 to date
- 2002, establishment of the Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM) in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran
- 2002, signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the operation of the Joint International Isotopes in Hydrology Programme (JIIHP) between UNESCO and IAEA
- 2003, International Year of Freshwater, UNESCO and UNDESA led the events of the Year and collaborated in forming the joint Secretariat and maintaining the official website and newsletter
- 2003, establishment of the International Centre on Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures (ICQHHS) in Yazd, Islamic Republic of Iran
- 2003, publication of ‘World Water Resources at the Beginning of the 21st Century’, which provides an updated assessment of the world’s freshwater resources and addresses problems concerning the availability, protection and management of water resources
- March 2003, launch of the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, forming the third pillar of the UNESCO water family with IHP and the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP)
- 2004, publication of ‘Water and Governance: Some Examples of Best Ethical Practice in Water Use’ by UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST), which aimed to spread new attitudes about water to encourage well-being and help the environment
- January 2004, H.R.H. Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud (UNESCO Special Envoy for Water) donates US$ 1 million to the UNESCO Solidarity Fund for Safe Water for All
- July 2004, publication of Groundwater Resources of the World and Their Use, a collaboration between hydrologists and hydrogeologists around the world
- 17-18 September 2004, 7th UNESCO/IAHS Kovacs Colloquium, focusing on the issue of scales in hydrology and water management
- 20-24 September 2004, 16th session of the IHP Intergovernmental Council, held in Paris. It adopted resolutions related to IHP governance, to UNESCO-IHE, and the proposed establishment of a IHP-HELP Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science at the University of Dundee in the UK and the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) in Japan
- 6-8 October 2004, international conference ‘Water: A Catalyst for Peace,’ 2nd international conference of the UNESCO-IHP/WWAP programme, From Potential Conflict to Cooperation Potential (PCCP) held in Zaragoza, Spain
- November 2004, meeting to create a Water Cooperation Facility, organized by PCCP and the World Water Council and held at UNESCO-IHE in Delft, the Netherlands.
MILESTONES
August-September 2002World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD)
The Plan of Implementation stemmed from the WSSD set out the following goals: halving, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water (a reaffirmation of the MDG); halving, by 2015, the proportion of people who do not have access to basic sanitation; developing integrated water resources management and water efficiency plans by 2005.
2003International Year of Freshwater
Used as a platform for promoting existing activities and spearheading new initiatives in water resources at the international, regional and national levels, the Year garnered worldwide attention and enthusiasm.

Implementation and Partnership Conference on Water
The conference provided a platform for African countries, the international community and UN agencies to reaffirm their commitment to solving Africa’s water crises.
