
Alice Aureli was born in Italy in 1958. She graduated with a Master of Science (MS) degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Catania in 1981 and pursued her postgraduate diploma in Hydrogeology from the University of Barcelona in 1982. She obtained her doctor degree (PhD) in geochemistry from the University of Palermo in 1988.
Between 1982 and 1985, she worked as a Researcher at the Institute of Earth Science, Department of Hydrogeology of the University of Catania and as consultant to private consultancy firms. In 1983, she obtained a fellowship from the Ecole des Mines (Institute of Mining Engineering) in Paris, France to work on 'Mathematical models application to groundwater management'. In 1987, she undertook field research at the Italian National Agency for Alternative Energy and Environment on 'Water Resources Contamination by Heavy Metals'.
She joined UNESCO in 1989 as an Associate Expert at the Division of Water Sciences. She presently occupies the post of Programme Specialist in charge of projects and studies related to aquifer systems and groundwater resources management.
