IHP partners

Since 1975, IHP has been the impetus behind many scientific and educational interactions. Far away from international conference centres, UNESCO operations reach into the field - where people live and face numerous water problems daily.

IHP gathers scientists and new technologies, forming partnerships and spearheading activities, all aiming towards better management of the Earth's water resources. The examples noted here, while not exhaustive, are representative of such activities. Recurring elements emphasize the following:

• learning by doing


• free exchange of information, ideas and expertise through workshops, seminars, symposia and publications


• collaboration among specialists in the natural and social sciences


• dialogue among planners, decision makers, local populations and international communities of scientists and engineers.

To implement the programme's activities, joint actions with UNESCO's other international scientific endeavours will continue, creating opportunities for intra- and intersectoral cooperation.

UNESCO Environmental Programmes

Cooperation with UNESCO's environmental programmes allows for broad cross-sectoral implementation of IHP's specific environmentally focused goals.

IHP regularly collaborates with the following UNESCO environmental programmes:

• Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)



• International Geoscience Programme (IGCP)



• Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB)



• Management of Social Transformations Programme (MOST)

United Nations Funds and Programmes

The United Nations funds and programmes with which IHP has established joint initiatives provide the basis for sound information and activity implementation in numerous sectors, ranging from food production to urban slums, from environmental protection to education.

United Nations Research and Training Institutes

Research and training are two of IHP's top priorities, and partnerships forged in those areas are of utmost importance to the programme's successful implementation.

IHP regularly collaborates with the following UN Research and Training Institutes:

• International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)



• United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)

Specialized United Nations Agencies

In collaboration with specialized UN agencies, IHP is able to participate in and spearhead a number of activities in specific areas of hydrological concern, from isotope technology to hydro-meteorological monitoring.

United Nations Regional Commissions

Because water challenges are region- and climate-specific, cooperation between IHP and UN regional commissions is extremely important to ensure that projects and information sharing are as efficient as possible.
